Large parts of Europe are among the most densely populated regions on earth. In these areas, there is often no room for nature. Over decades, thousands of animal and plant species have become rarer or extinct. The main reason: insufficient living space and too much human disturbance in breeding areas and feeding grounds. Undisturbed, spacious areas are becoming increasingly scarce. Sometimes, however, they take form in the very places that humans have been using for special purposes for decades – for example, in large mining areas or in military training areas. Although they are used intensively by some humans, they are at the same time largely closed to the general public. For many animals and plants, often even especially endangered ones, this is exactly the chance that they can’t find anymore anywhere else in our man-made environment. They get used to machines and working humans and learn that they don’t pose a threat.
