Synopsis
That the Cold War did not end in blood and tears was Radio Free Europe’s ultimate victory. “To Russia, with Love” tells how it won the hearts and minds of the people behind the Iron Curtain and brought down the Communist rule over Eastern Europe. The story of Radio Free Europe has not been told on film so far. The documentary retells the story of Radio Free Europe from the point of view of the RFE journalists and their audience. It addresses topics like: What did it mean for a dissident to broadcast to the country they still called home, to fight against a government, which had forced them to leave? How much was their everyday life ruled by fear for the family members they had left behind, knowing that their own actions could possibly threaten their relatives in the East? “To Russia, with Love” also pictures how communist regimes fought the station. There were bomb attacks and mysterious murders, like the case of the poisoned umbrella. Interview partners from the different language services give further insight into the various RFE sections and show the highlights of their career – the moments in which they felt they influenced history or even witnessed the long awaited end of the communist regime in Eastern Europe.

Synopsis
September 1962: A tunnel is driven from West to East Berlin. Four Berlin students are the initiators of the professionally and thoroughly organized project: The Italians Mimmo and Gigi, civil engineer Ulli and his friend Hasso. They all want to free friends, family members and lovers from the East: Those who are not in touch with anybody “over there” help digging for idealistic reasons as their “concern” was completely actual. “We wanted to help those we knew and hurt those we hated.” Peter, the man who was the reason for the idea of the tunnel to be born, was the only of the refugees who really took advantage of the new freedom: he was looking for a way to the wide world and until recently travelled through South America without a halt. What was driving him was not an excessive desire for freedom – his fate also turns the tunnel into a melodrama. Peter and four of the tunnel builders are seen in front of the camera. By turns they reconstruct the history of the tunnel. Their narration gains authenticity by original footage from the NBC archives shot on location in 1962 and by scenes reproduced today.

Synopsis
The beginning of the end of East Germany and the whole Eastern Block – During a week in October 1989, the people in Leipzig make history: “The
miracle of Leipzig”. People dancing on the Berlin Wall, calling out “We are the people!”. Border guards watching in amazement as
the Iron Curtain comes down, ending the division of Berlin, Germany and the world. Images that flashed around the globe and etched themselves on the collective memory. Many refer to it as "The Miracle of Berlin". But the real miracle took place somewhere else. In Leipzig. What happened there, provided a crucial impetus for peaceful revolution throughout East Germany. The docudrama reconstructs in authentic and emotional detail the
dramatic October days of the year 1989 in Leipzig, where the protests for freedom began and the dam of fear has been breached first. It features people talking to the camera – most of them for the first time – about their experiences at the time, about fears and hopes, courage
and despair, conflicts and solidarity. These accounts are framed by descriptions of the relevant political developments, decisions taken by the East German leadership, and events which took place elsewhere but
influenced the situation in Leipzig.

    Synopsis
They are the front-line fighters in the Cold War: 62 American, British and French members of the Allied Military Missions in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From their Mission bases in Potsdam they set off on espionage tours throughout the GDR, with the Stasi (State Security Police) in pursuit, grudgingly tolerated by the Soviets. Up to the present day the Mission members deny that they were spies - as they were unarmed, were officially accredited and everyone was able to recognise them as mission members by their uniforms. They recall with a smile the pretty East German women who they secretly photographed with their 1000mm lenses as long as there was no convoy with nuclear missiles of the type SS20 in sight, and they only admit reluctantly that their work could be very boring if they were waiting for days, hidden on a rail track waiting for troop movements. Mission cars being held up by road blocks to hinder the members in reconnoitering military objects is part of everyday life in the missions. On March 22nd 1984, however, everything is different. On this day the Stasi, in the form of Paul Schmidt, a member of the counterespionage service, sits at the steering-wheel of a lorry. When Schmidt suddenly comes tearing round the corner of a sidestreet, Mission member Phillip Mariotti tries to swerve out of his way, but Paul Schmidt drives straight towards him. The Mission car is almost totally wrecked and the lorry is a complete write-off. With relief Lieutenant General Gerhard Neiber from the Ministry of State Security reports the successful operation to Erich Mielke. ´´It was generally agreed that this was a tragic accident.´´

    Synopsis

    Synopsis
In the 70s Wolfgang Loetzsch was the most promising cycling talent in East Germany. An unwilling revolutionary, he refused to be an opportunist within the state sport apparatus. The secret service, the Stasi, arranged for an icy headwind to blow in the face of his career. 17 years long he won race after race in East Germany but was never allowed to participate in any important international race outside of the country. The documentary tells how an unpolitical man develops
a personal resistance against opportunism, cowardice and betrayal and in doing so upsets the entire machinery of a repressive state..

    Synopsis
In 1974 Volker Koepp went to Wittstock for the first time and filmed life in the old town in Brandenburg, especially the changes brought by the building of a big textile factory. The film focused on three women, Edith, Elsbeth and Renate. The films offered a fascinating glimpse into provincial life in the GDR and brought us close to the three women, who had to cope with constant problems at work, got married, had children and had come to terms with life in Wittstock. Now a new kind of normality has taken hold in Wittstock: The big factory is no longer there. Elsbeth goes from one retraining course to another. Renate has now been working for five years as a chambermaid in a small hotel, and Edith, who used to be so rebellious, has moved to the Heilbronn area and has become very tranquil. The film shows all this with an unexpectedly light touch, with a constant tension between sadness and comedy and with incomparably beautiful pictures.

    Synopsis
The film tells the story of a punk gang in East Berlin from 1979 to 1983. A group of rebel teenagers spend their afternoons hanging around drinking beer. They are suppressed with excessive power and violence by the instruments of the Socialist government. The pressure makes them become political and soon they start their first actions... From then on, the days of the gang are numbered. In 1983 the "Stasi" (East German Internal Security Service) decided on the final solution to the punk question. The gang was broken up and its members locked up in prison. We, Schneider and Mechthild Katzorke, the filmmakers, belonged to the gang. But unlike our friends whose parents were officials in the East German government we were rebels by birth. Priest daughters in an atheist system. Our story has a different ending. In 1995 we invited our old punk friends on a boat trip on the river Spree through the united Berlin. They all came. Plus the one who once created the punk-fever in us - John Peel, the pope of Punk. Together, we recall our experiences.

    Synopsis
In the night from the 12th to the 13th of August 1961, Socialist Unity Party Secretary General and President of the National Defense Council Walter Ulbricht gave the order to physically separate the different sectors of Berlin. On the morning of the 13th of August, armed border guards began ripping up the streets and barricading the area with barbed wire. A few days later, during the night from the 17th to the 18th of August, troops began replacing the barbed wire with cement blocks.

It Happened in August. Building the Berlin Wall - Anatomy of a Political Crisis portrays the bitter events surrounding the separation and division of Berlin. Twelve years after the fall of the Wall and the opening of the archives, the film offers, in a series of historical flashbacks, a representative and suspense-filled panorama of the greatest crisis in post-war Germany and international politics.
