Synopsis
Indiana Fuentes, public attorney for environmental protection receives death threats for protecting the largest remaining rainforest of Central America: Bosawas – 7,400 square kilometres of partly mountainous country, criss-crossed by hundreds of river courses and streams, a refuge for thousands of species of flora and fauna. The abundance of water in the area makes for lush vegetation, some of which has yet to be researched. In 1997, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, adding it the world network of Biosphere Reserves.. Situated at the border to Honduras and difficult to control, Bosawas is a paradise endangered by settlers, lumberjacks and gold-seekers. Jaguars, tapirs, toucan parrots and howler monkeys retreat ever further into the forest, red cedars and mahogany trees are becoming increasingly rare. The lone protectress, Indiana Fuente, is fighting not only for the rain forest, but also for its indigenous inhabitants: the Mayangna Indios. Formerly enslaved by the colonialists and attacked by other Indian tribes, the Mayangnas have withdrawn further back into the forest. In their villages there is neither electricity nor running water, next to no medical care, usually there is no teacher – as, for example, in Kudahwas, the village of Rigoberto Palacio. The documentary accompanies the public attorney on her dangerous control expeditions in the rainforest and the Mayangna Indian Rigoberto Palacio on his journey of hope through the tortured paradise of Bosawas.
