Synopsis
The charges brought against nurse Stephan L. are unbelievable: killing 20 patients of the Sonthofen hospital. The public keeps getting shaken by the fact that female and male nurses turn into self-proclaimed angels of death again and again. Nobody suspects perpetrators where medical care and healing are the main concerns. Because it was considered unimaginable, nurses have been able to commit murders over a very long period of time. Early warning signs were almost always ignored. Stephan L. was able to mix deadly cocktails in the Sonthofen hospital, because there was no control, because the doctors in charge deemed it unnecessary to conduct autopsies when in doubt. Natural causes of death were assigned routinely. In this film, "Die Todesengel", convicted ex-nurse Wolfgang L., who killed 29 people in 1990, speaks about his motifs on TV for the very first time. The documentary shows: the perpetrators are mostly unsure of themselves, struggling hard to gain any acceptance from others. Carelessness on behalf of the hospitals, sloppy autopsies or even none at all, and an increasing ignorance in the public view make it easy for them to kill. Stephan L.’s case will not be the last one.
