    Synopsis
Cows are massaged with hop pulp, hay is made into soup and schnapps, ham is cooked in asphalt - Switzerland is always good for culinary surprises. Which doesn't mean that in this land of happy cows cheese and chocolate have become things of the past. Swiss cuisine is simply as diverse and colourful as the political map - the latter being a Confederation of 26 cantons and demicantons, each with its own legislature and strong government. And then there is the ´´confusion of tongues´´ in this small country - Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic. It is thus hardly surprising that in this Little Babylon of the Alps each region cultivates its local cuisine in a spirit of proud independence, just as it stubbornly insisted on a square flag - the only one in the world apart from that of the Vatican City. And yet it also presents itself as a sophisticated cosmopolitan with its excellent star chefs.
