Synopsis
Greenland is the largest island in the world and 85% of its surface is covered by ice. Travelling in this land of harsh contrasts is one of the great experiences of nature which our age has to offer. Travelling in Greenland, this means by ship and plane. There are no roads between the towns and villages. Only within the larger settlements and cities are the streets asphalted, making it possible to travel by car. The film journey begins in Ilulissat, Greenland’s third largest city on the Disko Bay, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The name of the city means "icebergs" – rarely was a name more apt. Hundreds of them glide in a never-ending procession past the brightly coloured houses of the city. Sparkling giants, swimming crystal palaces, icy domes: the fishermen of Ilulissat are accustomed to this sight, after all they work within their midst. The film portrays the little city before the mountains of ice, tells its stories and its history, describes its people and its huskies. We then travel south by mail-boat, beyond the polar circle to Nuuk, the capital city. The red mail-boats are the most important links between the coastal settlements, most of which have no airstrips. Hence life on board can be quite entertaining. In Nuuk we encounter modern Greenland, western-oriented, American-styled.
