    Synopsis
In September 2003, Mariss Jansons took over as the new principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Born in 1943, in Riga, Latvia, he soon moved to Leningrad, where his father Arvid Jansons was also a director. There he studied violin, piano and conducting, and it was there that he began his career as a conductor in 1973. Meanwhile, he has conducted all important orchestras in all the world's music metropoles and is regarded as one of the very greatest in his profession. Nevertheless, he is not interested in the glitter and glamour of stardom: he is a modest man whose life is devoted entirely and passionately to his music and whose one desire is to do everything to perfection. He has one great concern: that many children and young people lack any appreciation of classical music. Changing this is one of his most important aims.
