Synopsis
Arved Fuchs has turned adventuring into a lifestyle. The fifty-year-old from Northern Germany crossed Greenland, circumnavigated Cape Horn, and sailed through the most dangerous ocean of the world. He is the only human being who walked to the North and the South Pole in the same year. But he does not aim for records – he aims for intense experiences and the satisfaction of a strong curiosity. In 1979, during his first expedition into the Arctic, Fuchs spends several months with the Inuit. They teach him how to survive in the snow and the cold of up to –50 degrees centigrade, and he falls in love with the hostile, icy landscape surrounding him. In 1989, he and Reinhold Messner cross the Antarctica on foot. These 92 days of forced marching make him famous, but the ensuing hype causes bad blood between the two. Dozens of expeditions on his own account follow. Whether on Shackleton’s trail in the Arctic Sea, whether on an old whaler through the Northeast Passage, or around the American continent – Fuchs has survived all dangers, because he always calculates all the risks involved. And he remained enviably normal, as his friends attest.
