Synopsis
The fact is that women are differently ill! Women deal with their body and their psyche differently than men. It is not only ovaries and testicles that make the “slight difference”, but also the size and weight of the body. Admittedly, this is nothing really new. But the
problem
is that no-one really takes this seriously: not the doctors, nor research, nor the pharmaceutical industry. The scientific documentation describes the spheres of medicine in which women are still unknown beings. For in Europe gender research is still a stepchild of medicine
– in research, in teaching and also in everyday practice. The two front women in gender research in Europe are the two feisty Professors Vera Regitz-Zagrosek from Berlin and her Swedish colleague Karin Schenck-
Gustaffson from Stockholm. In the beginning they were both branded as “feminist Taliban warriors” by their male colleagues. Gradually, however, many men in the medical industry are revising their opinion that men and women have to be treated in the same way. They are starting to realise that it has a considerable influence that women menstruate every month, can become pregnant, take the pill and enter the menopause. Progress is being made, and one can only hope that in future WOMAN will no longer be the risk factor of her gender.
