Germany’s colonial history is rather short. All the more contradictive are the legends and controversies that have formed around it. What did the Germans really do abroad? A historical report featuring never before published footage. Full of optimism, Germans had answered the call to arms in 1914, not only in the Reich but also in the so-called protectorates in Africa, China and the South Sea. But only a few weeks after the beginning of the war, hardly anything was left of the empire everyone had dreamed of. During the Weimar Republic, the longing for the lost colonies stayed alive, and after Hitler’s rise to power, preparations for a new colonial empire were started immediately.
