Synopsis
Libya is the third largest Saharan state. With its 1.8 million square kilometres Libya is about five times as large as Germany. But 90% of the land is desert, only the coastal strip in the north is very fertile. The film is a voyage of discovery and adventure through the Libyan Sahara and the world of the Tuareg, one of Libya’s largest nomadic tribes. The nomads of the Tuareg have adapted themselves to the harsh conditions of the desert and have been living for many generations in the Libyan part of the Sahara. Nowadays almost all the nomads have become sedentary. The film team covered over 5,000 arduous kilometres right across the Libyan desert, along the old caravan roads. It passed stony desert, high sand dunes, stark contrasts between the sandy landscapes and the bizarre rock formations, clear lakes in the midst of the desert, crater landscapes.
The route follows a fascinating and diverse landscape. Along the old caravan roads the film makes its stopovers at the strongholds of Tuareg culture. It documents the life of the Tuaregs in the past and in the present. And it reveals evidence of the former verdant past of the Libyan desert. Impressive finds show traces of a time when the Sahara
desert was still a fertile land, offering good living conditions to people and animals: pictures carved and painted in the rocks, bones and petrifactions.
