The changing of the seasons also takes place underwater. But does anyone know about the changes “down there”? How do fish, molluscs, insects and amphibians live in the course of the year in this invisible and unknown world? Who knows of the spectacular spring feelings in the lake when metre-long female pikes are pursued by several males through flooded meadows or reed belts? Who has any idea that the romantic frolicking of a pike “wedding” lasts barely an hour? Then the males have to take care not to be devoured by the females, who are almost twice their size. For during the long winter these predators had little success on their hunting forays, and an inattentive suitor would be a welcome dessert after making love. The most faithful lovers in the lake are the toads. Once they become a couple, then they stay together. But why do toads and frogs wander over kilometres to the lake of their birth before mating? Can fish migrate over land in order to reproduce? Each season raises an infinite number of questions: how does a water-dweller survive in a frozen lake? What do the fish do when the water gets too warm in summer? Focussing on several typical “protagonists” – a pike family, a male toad and a crab – the film tells the story of the seasons underwater.
