Synopsis
Billions of “lodgers” inhabit our homes. Golden spider beetles, daddy long-legs spiders (aka cellar spiders), biscuit beetles and book scorpions – vast numbers of them even live on our skin. The follicle mite, for example, lives on people’s skin and hair. After the birth of a child they move immediately from the mother to the baby. They are organisms about which we know next to nothing. How and where do they live? What do they eat? Are they harmful or merely irritating? And their numbers are growing! The Pharaoh ant, an extremely dangerous disease carrier, is on the advance due to the changing climate. Globalisation helps millimetre-sized “stowaways” to cover vast distances in goods transports. But we humans also have helpers: Spiders, silverfish and book scorpions prey relentlessly upon the vermin. The documentation “The Lodgers” uses TV high-tech to illuminate the mysterious world of this microcosm. It shows living creatures that have never before been seen on television.
