The follicle mite, for example, lives on people’s skin and hair. After the birth of a child they move immediately from the mother to the baby. They are organisms about which we know next to nothing. How and where do they live? What do they eat? Are they harmful or merely irritating? And their numbers are growing! The Pharaoh ant, an extremely dangerous disease carrier, is on the advance due to the changing climate. Globalisation helps millimetre-sized “stowaways” to cover vast distances in goods transports.
