Synopsis
In the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, extending over 6,000 square kilometres in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, live the
last of the lowland gorillas. It was here that Dian Fossey began her research on the "Gorillas In The Mist". The species is threatened by the recurrent
wars in the region, but also by the pygmies, with whom
they share this habitat and who hunt the gorillas in order to eat their meat or to sell them. Nobody knows how many gorillas have survived the massacres - only one thing is certain, their numbers are constantly
decreasing and the five families, who were accustomed to human beings, have withdrawn ever further into the inaccessible highlands of the National Park. Carlos Schuler came to the Congo 20 years ago, and the protection of the gorillas has become his life´s work. In 1996 he took
charge of a GTZ* project in the National Park, which was founded by the Belgian Adrien Deschyrver in 1970 and is now part of UNESCO´s World Nature Heritage. Every day Schuler and the park rangers - many of
them former poachers - set off in search of the gorillas, sometimes taking tourists with them. Schuler hopes that these tours to the
gorillas will one day enable the National Park to support itself.
The film portrays the encounter with the gorillas and the efforts of the Park to save them.
