An ancient tale tells of a “white she-wolf” that once came to the aid of a nomadic tribe in the Urals. The pact with the wolves seemed to have lasted for centuries. But then everything changed. In the post- Communist era the so-called “new Russians”, notorious nouveaux-riches, have also invaded Bashkortostan, the land of the “white she-wolf”. Not only are they rolling in money, but in an upsurge of bravado they constantly search for ways of living out their lust for adventure in decadent leisure-time pursuits. Equipped with the best and most expensive hunting rifles and with the largest and fastest ski-jets, they tear over the snow-covered plains and through the valleys of the Urals. Their favourite prey are the wolves, no matter how desperately the fleeing animals struggle in the deep snow – these hunters have no concern for or insight into ecological interaction. Nowadays in the Urals it is no longer the people but the wolves that are in distress. The pact seems to have been forgotten. But now a “white she-wolf” has reappeared on the scene...
