Synopsis
After the broadcasting of the film “Submission” about the repression of women in Islam, the director Theo van Gogh received an increasing number of murder threats. On November 2nd 2004 he was murdered at about 9 a.m. in Amsterdam’s Linnaeusstraat. An execution in broad daylight. The whole country is still in a state of shock. The murderer is Mohammed Bouyeri, 26 years old at the time of the murder, born in Amsterdam of Moroccan descent, who grew up in the Netherlands. He has Moroccan and Dutch citizenship and seemed to be well integrated. So was this a surprising amok run, the tragic deed of a mentally deranged young man? In her new documentary film Esther Schapira (“Three Bullets and a Dead Child”, “The Day I Wanted to Enter Paradise”) describes what lay behind this public execution. “The Day Theo van Gogh was Murdered” is set in Holland but that is mere coincidence: it could have happened anywhere in Europe. This film concerns all of us.
