Synopsis
Margrit Woodtli, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, was about to be placed in a nursing home in Switzerland when her son decided to take her with him to Thailand. There she spent the last three years of her life. Three women kept her company and took loving care of her. Christoph Müller followed Margrit Woodtli’s life for more than 3 years. The result is a moving documentary that shows what our options are at the end of our lives. Margrit Woodtli was a physically active woman despite suffering from Alzheimer’s. “In Switzerland she would probably have been sedated in a nursing home”, says Martin Woodtli, her son. He wanted to spare his mother such an ordeal. And so he took her to Thailand. There he employed three nurses who looked after her around the clock. Despite her gradual decline due to Alzheimer’s Mrs Woodtli led an active life in Thailand. She loved to visit temples, play badminton, and go shopping at the market. She talked to the Thais in her broad Bernese dialect and had new adventures every day. The only difference between her and the tourists: She immediately forgot everything she experienced.
