Synopsis
With its 6,800 kilometres the Amazon is the longest
river in the world – a vast water system in the middle
of Latin America:
the Amazon releases 190,000 cubic metres of fresh water
per second into the Atlantic. It is joined by 10,000 rivers
en route until it
reaches its estuary and flows around –
quite incidentally – the largest river island on earth.
The “green lung” of the world is how people often refer
to Amazonia - the area around this vast river. The green
lung? “We are fighting on our own against everyone”,
says Eriberto Jualinga, a Quechua Indian from Ecuador.
He lives in the village of Sarayacu, which for years has
been resisting the attempts of international oil companies
to tap the resources of the Amazon region. 1,500 kilograms
of explosives have been buried around Sarayacu by the oil
companies.
The intact world of the Amazonas has long since ceased
to exist, the jungle is threatened...
