Synopsis
The Reichraminger Hintergebirge is not a “spectacular” landscape. During the last centuries it has hardly changed and with its extended, jungle-like forest areas it still presents the image of a landscape that was once quite common in Central Europe. Nowadays, this landscape fossil is the largest and almost completely unpopulated forest region in the Northern Limestone Alps. In this film Jürgen Eichinger portrays this
almost unknown mountain region in the south-east of Upper Austria. Since 1997 the “Great Forest” together with the Sengsengebirge form the Limestone Alps National Park, a unique refuge for rare species of flora and fauna. Water has played a major role in shaping the landscape of the
Hintergebirge. The wild mountain streams, comprising a total of 180 km, are still of the best drinking water quality and form the largest coherent and almost unpolluted eco-system of streams in Upper Austria. A national-park ranger, a dairymaid, a forester and a biologist grant us insights into an almost forgotten world, the Reichraminger Hintergebirge.
