    Synopsis
The lives of people who are virtually or completely unable to read and write are for the most part shrouded in secrecy, in the attempt to conceal their handicap from others. The estimated number of all “functional illiterates” in Germany is around four million. Approximately 15% of all Germans verge on the border to illiteracy. No more than some 20,000 adults currently attend literacy courses. For the first time a TV series grants direct insights into the secret life of illiterates: six episodes, each with 30 minutes running time, show what being unable to read and write means for them. The series is based on authentic material, i.e. on true stories recounted in interviews with the scriptwriter Michael Freund.
