Synopsis
The Swiss Bertrand Piccard was the first man to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon. Now he wants to achieve a new endeavour: To fly around the world in a solar powered plane to promote sustainable development. What makes this son of a father, who dived to the deepest spot on earth and a grandfather, who was the first man in the stratosphere and in the abyss always face new challenges? We join Bertrand Piccard on a fantastic balloon flight over the Swiss Alps to find out about his life and to experience how life can really be like ballooning. This film starts where Piccards took off in 1999, namely in the small village of Chateau d’Oex in the Swiss Alps. We join Bertand Piccard and his British copilot Brian Jones for a flight full of surprises. The balloon we are flying with is a small replica of the record breaking Breitling Orbiter 3 and in it Bertand Piccard explains us his philosophy of life. As a balloonpilot you cannot control all the winds and have to drift with. The only thing you can change is the altitude, because on different altitudes, you may find winds that blow you in the direction you desire. The same applies to our daily life. We know where we are coming from, but we don’t know where we are going to. We also see him preparing for his new venture: The flight around the world in a solar plane. It is still a long way to go but Piccard with his overwhelming enthusiasm is right on track.
