Synopsis
The writer Robert Byron already described Herat as the forgotten capital of the "Oriental Medici". Under the Timurids the city reached its cultural zenith. Queen Gohar Schad promoted the arts, poetry, music and painting. The film team has her tomb, an impressive domed monument, explained to them by a keeper, who has set himself the task of preserving each tile and each shard that has survived destruction by the Taliban and to ensure that no more of the ancient art treasures fall into foreign hands. From Herat the team heads towards Central Afghanistan. In clay villages parched by the sun they encounter people who are trying once again to build a future for their children with their bare hands, strengthened by the solidarity with one another. For many of them it is the spiritual side of Islam, Sufism, which enables them to sustain their courage. In the little town of Shisht, where famous Sufi masters once taught, the team is invited to rest in the mosque and to listen to the singing of a young Sufi. In the high valley of Bamiyan they come across the only archaeological excavation since the end of the war, the search for a buried giant Buddha. And in Kabul, where the journey ends, the team visits the museum where, for the first time since the end of the war, restored Buddha figures are once again exhibited. They were pieced together again after being destroyed by the Taliban.
