"Every day," says 7 oder Warum ich auf der Welt bin’s multi-hyphenate, Antje Starost, "we find ourselves presented with fresh scenarios of all that divides us in this world. This film intends to focus on the exact opposite: the things we all have in common." The documentary focuses on children, seven in number, from different nations. "All children are great pioneers and explorers," says Starost, "irrespective of where and how they live. They display enormous philosophical potential and naturally possess the most important prerequisite for this pursuit: inquisitiveness. Their urge to discover the whys and wherefores is inborn. They have an unerring ability to provide astonishingly simple answers to life’s knotty questions. In fact, there are no adults in the film at all!" How does a child from Ecuador describe his life as opposed to a child, say, from the Czech Republic or France? Children are deeply fascinated by all things unknown and foreign. There is nothing quite as exciting for children as encountering something new and trying to comprehend it. The young protagonists’ daily lives reflect the entire spectrum of experience. Their fears and problems, their capacity for fun and sense of humor, all of their observations and their probing can be understood as a response to the quintessential question: why am I here?
